The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) wants the former mayor of Lucea Shernette Haughton to also step down as councillor for the Green Island Division of the Hanover Parish Council.

The call by the executive of the JLP Area Council 4 follows a damning report by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG), which raises questions of nepotism and breaches of the Parish Council Act while Haughton served as mayor.

Haughton has refuted the findings of the report, which is now with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to determine whether the former mayor should face criminal charges.

Chairman of the JLP Area Council 4 and Councillor for the Flankers Division, Charles Sinclair, says the findings of the OCG probe are very serious as they go to the core of the local government system and governance on a whole.

As a result, he says Haughton should resign or be forced to resign in order to preserve the integrity of the parish council and the political process.
