A Jamaican surgeon who practises in the United States wants to see a vibrant organ transplant unit established on the island.

Dr Vaughn Whittaker says such a move could add an average of eight years to the life expectancy of persons in the 60 to 65 years old age group.

Vaughn says he is aware that there have been several unsuccessful attempts to establish a transplant unit in Jamaica.

As a result, he has proposed that the government and the private sector play a leading role in helping to establish such a unit.

Vaughn was speaking in Trelwany last week during an appreciation ceremony for one of his former teachers, Juliet Moncrieffe, who retired after 42 years.
