Suspect in US Embassy security scare remains in police custody

The man who caused a security scare at the US Embassy in Kingston remains in police custody this afternoon.

He was accosted by the police and US Embassy security officers after throwing a bag over the perimeter wall of the embassy.

The incident resulted in a shutdown of operations at the embassy and a traffic snarl along Old Hope Road, where the building is located.

Speaking at a Jamaica House press conference following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake, said the bag was examined and no threats were uncovered.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police also said the security forces followed the standard operating procedures for responding to such incidents.

Meanwhile, the US embassy is yet to advise what will happen for persons who had visa appointments which had to be postponed because of today’s incident.
