20 non-violent prisoners released, Food for the Poor pays fines
The charity organisation Food for the Poor has again facilitated the release of 20 non-violent prisoners from police stations and prisons across the island in time to spend the Easter holidays with their families.
Food for the Poor says the 19 men and one woman were freed on March 25 and 26.
They were serving time for traffic-related offences, larceny and other misdemeanours because they were unable to pay the fines.
The charity organisation says 36 other non-violent prisoners were also released simultaneously in Honduras, Haiti and Guyana.
