Malahoo-Forte demands action from health officials to halt sale of unfit meat
Opposition Spokesperson on Health and Wellness, Senator Marlene Malahoo Forte, is demanding that the health authorities take immediate action to stop the sale of unfit meat scavenged from the Riverton disposal site in Kingston.
According to Malahoo Forte, it has been a week since the issue was exposed by the media, however, she says neither Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson nor officials from the health ministry have responded.
She is recommending that health officials ensure that meat discarded at the dump is incinerated to avoid theft and spread of disease.
She adds that strong penalties should also be put in place for not only people who sell discarded meat, but those who fail to properly dispose of meat.
Unfit meat has continued to sell on the streets of the capital city, despite the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) admitting that it is aware of the issue. However, the KSAC says it needs the support of the Public Health Department to address the problem.
