Agriculture sector in growth mode, says Buchanan

State Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture Luther Buchanan says the agriculture sector remains in growth mode despite last year’s prolonged drought.

Buchanan says the government intends to keep the growth momentum going.

He says as part of a deliberate strategy, the ministry selected and gave special attention to a number of key crops, such as table Irish potato.

According to Buchanan, this contributed to the 90 per cent sufficiency Jamaica recorded last year.

The junior agriculture minister also announced that the nine Agro Parks established by the government have contributed to a reduction in imported foods last year.

He was addressing this year’s staging of the St Mary Agri-Expo held at the Gray’s Inn Sports Complex, in Annotto Bay recently.
