No action yet by PNP against embattled former Lucea mayor
The decision-making organ of the ruling Peoples' National Party (PNP) failed to decide on action against the embattled former mayor of Lucea, Shernet Haughton, at its sitting today.
PNP General Secretary Paul Burke says the National Executive Council decided to delay action against Haughton by a month to allow for the process of natural justice to take place.
Haughton has been accused by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) of nepotism in a public office and breaching government guidelines. The OCG found that 22 contracts, worth more than J$3.7 million, were awarded to relatives and persons affiliated with the former mayor.
The matter had been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), but Paula Llewellyn ruled that no crime was committed even though there were breaches.
