Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has declared that the Government is committed to saving the lives of Jamaicans with the impending passage of a new road traffic law.

She was speaking this morning during the official launch of the third United Nations Global Road Safety Week 2015.

Earlier this week, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Dr Morais Guy tabled in the House of Representatives, amendments that will overhaul the current road traffic legislation.

Simpson Miller is urging Jamaicans to play their part in the campaign to improve safety on Jamaica’s roads.

One-hundred-and-eighteen people have been killed on the roads between January one and April 27.

According to the National Road Safety Council, this is ten more than what was recorded for the corresponding period last year.

Last year, 331 deaths were recorded, the highest in five years.
