Dr Wayne West of the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society says he supports the Government’s move to introduce Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination for teenage girls, but says it must also be extended to boys.

The vaccine has been controversial in some countries, with some people claiming adverse side effects and others claiming it promotes promiscuity.

However, West says he believes introduction of the vaccine should be encouraged.

Meanwhile, West is cautioning that the vaccine should not be viewed as licence to engage in risky sexual behaviour as there are other viruses and diseases which are transmitted sexually.

He says there needs to be a public education programme to accompany the administering of the vaccine.
