Stop shielding criminals – Police urge Bedward Gardens residents

The slaying of a 40-year-old woman in the volatile St Andrew community of Bedward Gardens yesterday has triggered another appeal from the police for residents to stop shielding criminals.

The slain woman has been identified as Maureen Whittaker, who was also a resident of Bedward Gardens.

According to the police, this is the second murder in the community in four days.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit reports that Whittaker was shot several times by unknown assailants along the Dallas Castle main road shortly after 7 o’clock.

Investigators say they believe she was shot in full view of several persons, but claims residents have been reluctant to come forward and assist them.

In a statement today, CCU appealed to residents and friends of persons involved in criminal activities not to provide safe havens for them as this is a criminal offence and may also put their lives at risk.
