New pasport fees take effect today

The new fee structure for Jamaican passports will take effect today.

The new fees were originally scheduled to be imposed last Tuesday, however, a six-day delay was announced following a rush on the offices of the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA).

There was also public outcry for more time.

As of today, the price to obtain an adult passport will move from $4,500 to $6,500.

A passport for a child will cost $4,000, up from $2,700.

There will also be other increases, including the cost to replace a lost passport.

PICA’s chief executive officer, Jennifer McDonald, says the increases are vital because as of this financial year, the government will no longer be providing the $300 million that PICA needs to sustain its operations.

Amid the rush last week, PICA moved its headquarters for the processing of applications from its Constant Spring Road base to the National Indoor Sports Centre for two days.
