Government is to strengthen electronic surveillance of the nation's roadways as it tries to reduce the numbers of road fatalities.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says more systems will be introduced to curb speeding and disobedience of traffic signals.

She says the Government will also be updating the Road Traffic Act and will be strengthening its public awareness campaigns.

Simpson Miller, who chairs the National Road Safety Council, was addressing the start of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers' Association's National Road Safety Month late last week.

More than 150 people have died in road crashes since the start of the year, nine more than the previous period last year.
