Parish Disaster Committees near Completion of Hurricane Preparation
THE OFFICE of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has indicated that preparations for the hurricane season are well advanced.
The disaster agency said the parish disaster committees had reach a 75-80 per cent completion of activities related to preparations for the hurricane season, which began on June 1 and ends November 30.
These activities include engagement of communities and parish stakeholders, public awareness, cleaning of drains and gullies, preparation of shelters and assignment of shelter managers.
While highlighting a state of readiness, ODPEM noted several areas of concerns, including the response capacity of first responders.
The agency also said its response mechanism has been well developed and encompasses early warnings from the National Meteorological Service, activation of the national response team and activation of parish emergency response 12 hours before the impact of a hurricane.
The use of technology will be featured in preparation and response through the use of social media, geographic information systems and cell phone apps.
The agency declined to give details on how much money was allocated for the preparation efforts.
