The Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences And Child Abuse (CISOCA) says it is concerned about the number of children being sexually abused in Kingston and St Andrew.

Assistant Commission of Police Ealan Powell says the issue of persons having sex with children under 16 years of age is a matter of great concern.

He says the majority of cases involved children between four and 16 years old.

According to CISOCA there have been 278 reported cases of sexual intercourse with children under 16 since the beginning of the year.

There have also been 46 reported cases of teenage pregnancy.

The figure represents a decline over the same period last year when 63 pregnancies were reported.

Meanwhile, CISOCA says 34 persons have been convicted since the start of the year for having sex with a child under 16 years old.
