Port Morant police constable Calvert Burton, who was arrested and charged for rape and grevious sexual assault in 2013, will face trial in the St Thomas Circuit Court on July 6.

Burton, who was 28 years old at the time of the incident, was granted bail in the sum of 800 thousand dollars in the Morant Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court in October 2013, with the additional condition that he surrender all his travel documents and report to the police on a daily basis.

It is alleged that Constable Burton was on patrol in Prospect, St Thomas on September 15, 2013 when he stopped at a bar and engaged a young lady in conversation.

It is further alleged that he took her to a secluded area where the assault took place.

Burton was charged following a report made to the police and a probe done by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse (CISOCA).
