Government seeking to pass Bills to postpone parish council elections

The parliament is at this hour debating a proposal by the Government which could see local government elections being held as late as December 2016.

Local government elections have been due since March 3, and today was the latest date by which it must be held.

But the government has taken two bills to parliament to postpone the polls.

The Bills are: the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation General Election (Postponement) Act 2015 and the Parish Councils General Election (Postponement) Act 2015.

The opposition spokesman on local government, Desmond McKenzie, has described the latest move by the Portia Simpson Miller-led administration as a dark moment for local government.
