Allowance for jurors to increase

Persons who serve as jurors in the island's court system are to receive an increase in the allowance payable to them.

The allowance, which is currently $500 per day, is to be increased to $2,000.

Justice Minister, Senator Mark Golding signed Regulations to increase the allowance last month.

The allowance is intended to assist in meeting jurors’ traveling expenses and refreshment during each day’s jury service.

This increase in the jury allowance comes at a time when the Ministry of Justice is pursuing a programme of reform of the Justice System, including legislation to improve the functioning of the jury system.

The empanelling of jurors has been a major challenge in the system, often leading to delays in the commencement of trials.

The allowance was last adjusted in 1998.
