Treat water before consuming - Health ministry urges

Director of Health Promotion and Protection in the Ministry of Health, Dr Sonia Copeland is urging persons to properly treat water before consuming.

According to Dr Copeland, this is especially important in light of the increase in the storage of water due to drought conditions now being felt in some sections of the island.

She says persons often collect water from various untreated sources including rivers and streams which may not be fit for consumption.

As a result, she's urging persons to ensure they add bleach to or boil water from these sources before consumption.

Water should be boiled for at least five minutes before use.

Copeland says two drops of bleach should be added to every litre of water and left to stand for at least a half-an-hour before consumption.
