Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Caretaker for St Thomas Eastern, Delano Seiveright is calling for the Minister of Agriculture to intervene in the situation at the Golden Grove Sugar Company in an effort to save the jobs of hundreds of workers.

The company has signaled that it may be forced to close the facility as a result of financial losses.

According to the company, it has recorded about two billion dollars in debt since it acquired the sugar factory in 2009.

Seiveright says the closure of the sugar factory would be devastating to the livelihood of sugar farmers and the economy of the parish.

The company reportedly employs 1,200 sugar cane workers.

According to the JLP caretaker, news of a possible shutdown of the golden grove sugar factory has resulted in panic among the many workers, their families and the wider communities.

Seiveright says the situation needs immediate intervention from the government.
