The National Solid Waste Management Agency (NSWMA) is dismissing reports that there was a fire at the Riverton City disposal site this morning.

Residents in several communities in the Corporate Area reported seeing thick smoke coming from the direction of the dump.

However, Chairman of the NSWMA Dennis Chung says the smoke was due to the burning of tyres by residents of Riverton City and other areas close to the dump.

Chung says it is a common practice by persons seeking to get the copper wires, which are then sold in the scrap metal trade, but warned of the dangers involved.
