Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, said the move is in recognition of the tremendous need for financial assistance by schools across the island.

The Ministry of Education is to increase the maintenance grant to primary schools when the new school year begins in September.

Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, said the move is in recognition of the tremendous need for financial assistance by schools across the island.

Thwaites said the level of increase is now being calculated and an announcement will be made soon.

He acknowledged that the adjustment may not be enough but says the education ministry is committed to supporting primary schools.

The Education Minister said that while it is reasonable for schools to ask parents for a contribution, schools should not insist that they pay a fee before their child is admitted into a primary school.

Thwaites was speaking at a recent Back-to-School Conference in Montego Bay, St James.
