OCHO RIOS, St Ann:

With the fitness trend continuing to spread across Jamaica, Myers' Fitness Centre's fifth annual staging of Gym Expo was always going to bring out the fitness enthusiasts.

And so it did on Saturday at the Ocean Village car park in Ocho Rios, as scores of persons turned out for the event.

With support from other gyms, such as Body Mekanic and Miami Fitness Centre, and a wide range of sponsors, including The Gleaner, director of the event, Randy Myers, happily labelled the event a success.

"It's definitely another successful year," Myers declared. "A lot of people have come out and everybody is enjoying themselves.

"It's a good look and we see where we're taking the event to a next level. More people are gravitating towards fitness and health, so it's really going great and I'm very grateful for the support from my team, of course, to make the event such a huge success, and, of course, our sponsors."

healthier lifestyle

The focus of the gym expo was to promote fitness and health and to show that fun can be had while working out, getting fitter, and living a better and healthier lifestyle.

The expo was the culmination of trips across Jamaica by the Myers' outfit to engage gyms in different parishes as to the importance of physical activities and why it is very necessary to make physical activity a very important part of one's lifestyle.

Some new events were incorporated this year, in terms of competitions. Gym members from the various gyms participated in competitions in endurance, family boot camp, push-up, and strength, among other activities.

There were exhibitions of various workout routines, such as step aerobics, zumba, kick boxing and several others.

The event not only highlighted the importance of physical activity, but also healthy eating habits, with stalls offering natural juices, fruits and health products.

The importance of massages, too, was highlighted courtesy of Jewel Paradise Cove, which offered free massages as the hotel coincided the end of its Yoga and Wellness Retreat with the expo.
