Porus High School Principal Michael Stewart was last night presented as the People's National Party's standard bearer for South Manchester for the next general election.

Stewart succeeds five-time Member of Parliament Michael Peart, who is also the speaker of the House of Representatives.

A former president of the Jamaica Teachers' Association, Stewart was officially presented during a constituency meeting in Porus, Manchester last night as the governing party intensifies preparations for a general election.

There has been heightened speculation that a national poll will be called this year after the Prime Minister told comrades last week that she is ready.

The Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips used the party meeting in Porus last night to trumpet benchmark achievements under his ministry this term.

According to Dr Phillips, the Government has met every obligation under its deal with the International Monetary Fund.

He also cited improvement in unemployment figures moving from 15 per cent in 2012 to 13 per cent now, with projections of marginal growth expected for the upcoming quarter.
