Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, has indicated that starting this month 20 schools will be removed from the shift system over the school year.

Thwaites made the disclosure yesterday at a back to school press conference.

Among the schools are Vauxhall High, Anchovy High, Roger Clarke High, Santa Cruz Primary and Junior High and Eltham High.

The education minister says the move is expected to bring greater efficiency and improvements in education at the selected schools.

Thwaites says at least a further 12 schools are being targeted for removal from the shift system later this academic year.

He says the education ministry plans to build additional classrooms in some schools and reassign some students as part of the programme to remove schools from the shift system.

Additionally, Thwaites says the ministry is also looking at expanding the extended school day system in some schools.
