Co-chair of the Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC) Richard Byles is urging the Government not to drag out the calling of general election.

Speaking at an EPOC press briefing yesterday, Byles acknowledged that it appears an election is imminent.

Both major political parties have indicated that they intend to finalise their list of candidates for general election by the end of this month.

Analysts have been speculating that the Government will be calling an early election, with some saying it could take place before yearend.

However, Byles says if the period of uncertainty continues it could lead to a wait and see attitude on the part of businesses.

Meanwhile, Byles says he expects that whichever party forms the next government will continue with the current economic programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He says Jamaica cannot afford to have the programme stopped even if adjustments are made to it.
