Lawyer barred from practising in Jamaica, ordered to repay thousands
The General Legal Council has barred attorney Arlean Moreta Beckford from practising in Jamaica.
The lawyer has been struck from the Roll of Attorneys-at-law which means she cannot practise in courts in Jamaica as of September 1.
The Legal Council, which regulates the legal profession, is warning the public not to engage Moreta Beckford as a lawyer.
The order was made by the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council after hearing evidence in a complaint brought by a former client.
The Disciplinary Committee found that the lawyer was guilty of professional misconduct.
According to the Legal Council, the lawyer was acting on behalf of the complainant's husband in the sale of a property.
It says the lawyer failed to account for $734,995.
The Council says the Disciplinary Committee viewed the lawyer's conduct as reprehensible and ordered that she repay the money.
