Youth Minister Lisa Hanna has instructed the Child Development Agency (CDA) to investigate the circumstances under which children were taken out of school yesterday for a protest which led to the death of one girl.

She says her ministry is deeply saddened by the death of 11-year-old Octavia Smith, a student of the Prickly Pole Primary School in Bensonton, St Ann.

She says the CDA is to deploy a team of first responders to provide support to the classmates of the deceased child.

Meanwhile, in a release yesterday, the education ministry condemned the involvement of children in what it said was a political protest.

The ministry said some parents took their children out of school to participate in a political demonstration in Claremont.

The child reportedly collapsed as she ran to join a bus that had been sent to take students to the site of the protest.
