Last day to register for next voters' list
Today is the last day for persons wishing to get on the next voters’ list to register.
The voters’ list is published twice each year on May 31 and November 30.
This biannual updating of the list allows for the addition of newly-registered electors and the removal of electors who are no longer eligible to be on the list, such as those who are reported and confirmed dead.
The May 2015 list had a total of 1,793,039 electors, which was 28,932 higher than the previous one.
Director of Elections, Orrette Fisher, yesterday said there has been a significant increase in the number of persons seeking to get on to the next voter’s list.
Fisher said preliminary figures have shown a major jump in applications across urban and rural parishes, but he could not provide specifics.
The director of elections informed that the Electoral Office of Jamaica has had to put in place additional staff and other measures to handle the rush at some of its offices.
A general election is constitutionally due in 2016, but there have been several signals from the government that an election may be called this year.
