Everald Warmington says many Jamaicans have been turning to Food for the Poor to provide them with housing.

Member of Parliament for St Catherine South Western Everald Warmington is calling for the Government to immediately reinstitute the old age pension benefit scheme.

Moving a motion in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, Warmington noted that a large number of Jamaicans are affected by poverty and most are senior citizens.

He noted that from the 1960s to 80s the government provided a monthly allowance to the elderly who did not have a pension.

Warmington said the Government should get back to doing this.

He also called for the Indigent and farmhouse housing programmes to be revived.

According to Warmington many Jamaicans have been turning to Food for the Poor to provide them with housing.

However, he said it should be the responsibility of the government to provide housing for the poor.
