UPDATE: Attorney Earl Melhado arrested, charged with fraud
The police have now laid fraud charges against attorney at law Earl Melhado who was arrested at the Supreme Court this morning.
The 65-year-old lawyer was arrested by detectives from the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).
Melhado was robed in his gown when MOCA detectives surrounded him and took him into custody as he stepped out of a courtroom.
MOCA says the arrest is the culmination of months of investigations into allegations of fraudulent conversion of client funds following the sale of a property in 2012.
Melhado is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court next week.
In the meantime, lawyers attending court this morning raised concerns about the way in which Melhado was taken into custody by law enforcement personnel.
Lawyers who were on the scene of the arrest at the courthouse are claiming that the police may have acted illegally when they arrested the attorney.
Attorney at-Law, Hugh Wildman, says the law prohibits someone from being arrested at or within the precincts of the Supreme Court.
According to Wildman, the action of the police may be deemed as contempt of court.
