INDECOM says since the start of the year, it has received 12 complaints from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation following reports of the coordinated abuse of inmates at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Kingston.

According to INDECOM, since the start of the year, it has received 12 complaints from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre.

However, it says the probe was launched on December 1 following a request for information about the injuries of one inmate.

"The Commission is not in a position to report on the allegations until more substantive information has been acquired," an INDECOM spokesperson said in a statement this afternoon.

It said the public will be informed once the investigation has reached a stage where it is appropriate to comment.
