Don't import vehicle trackers, garage door openers without permission, warns authority

Persons planning to import devices such as garage door openers and vehicle trackers, are being warned not to do so until they get approval from the Spectrum Management Authority.

In a Sunday Gleaner advertisement yesterday, the authority said if persons import the devices without preapproval, they will be seized by the Jamaica Customs Department until permission is given.

The Spectrum Management Authority is the main government body set up to manage Jamaica's radio frequency spectrum.

Some of the other devices mentioned in the ad include vehicle immobilisers, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags and cellular radios.

While no detailed explanation was given, the authority noted that persons who intend to import a wireless radio device should consult with the authority to ensure the device is approved to operate in Jamaica.

If the device is approved, importers will be charged a processing fee.
