The security industry, like any other in Jamaica, has seen its fair share of changes over the years. David Whittaker, now at the helm of Guardsman Limited as its managing director, is well aware of these changes and in his new role is aiming to position the organisation as the leading security service provider locally, regionally and internationally.

Whittaker, who has been a part of the Guardsman team for more than seven years, has occupied several senior management positions, with each offering its challenges and fulfilling experiences. He considers his new role as another opportunity to use the wealth of expertise gained over the years to lead the company to greater success.

"At Guardsman, we know that the needs and wants of the market change over time, and in order to remain relevant, we have created solutions to satisfy these needs," Whittaker said in an interview with The Gleaner.

Whittaker's objectives include developing these new services that will meet the evolving needs of the market and growing the company's current business. This he said will include establishing a presence in the global marketplace and to be a world-renowned security and safety company.

"You can expect to see Guardsman branching out its services into different realms of the security field, specifically within the consultancy, aviation, hospitality and education industry," Whittaker said.

Whittaker will ensure that his team is well trained and motivated while working towards clearly-defined goals and objectives.

"We are a customer service-oriented company, and as such, I develop and maintain total quality management systems to ensure that our client base receives the best quality service with excellent customer support," he said.

Whittaker will also lead the company in its research and development programme, which will aim to keep Guardsman at the forefront of the industry while finding new services to maintain the company's reputable competitive edge and maintaining cost-control strategies.

"I also ensure that I make myself easily accessible with my open-door policy or via telephone. I never refuse a one on one chat with my team members," Whittaker emphasised.

With Whittaker's aim of having Guardsman become the leading security company in the Caribbean and maintaining a standard by which all others in the industry will be judged, he maintains, "Integrity and relationship building are crucial components of what our business is all about."

Whittaker has implemented several initiatives to diversify the company's service offerings which have led to immense growth in revenue and profitability. This he said has come about due to the highly competitive industry within which they operate that has forced them to find voids in the market that provide them with opportunities to extend the business.
