Rameish Simpson, the St Thomas man said to have been rescued from the police by a politician six years ago spent last night in jail on suspicion of several offences after a dramatic car chase that ended in the sea.

A passenger whose identity was not ascertained was also arrested.

The police say an illegal Uzi submachine firearm and 16 rounds of ammunition were found and the Mitsubishi Pajero had to be pulled from the sea in Grant’s Pen, St Thomas.

According to the police, about 10:30 a.m., members of a team were patrolling the Grants Pen main road when they signalled the driver of the Pajero to stop.

The driver reportedly disobeyed and diverted on to Fish House Lane in the community.

The police pursued and the driver drove the vehicle about 300 metres into the sea.

The driver and the passenger were subsequently taken into custody by the Police.

The Marine Police and the JDF Coast Guards helped to remove the vehicle from the sea.
