Removal of tyres from Riverton dump to be completed next month
The removal of tyres from the Riverton City disposal site in St Andrew is slated to be completed next month.
Local Government Minister Noel Arscott says the tyres are being moved to a location approved by the National Environment and Planning Agency.
In addition Arscott says the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries to remove 5,000 tyres that will be used to construct artificial reefs.
The tyres are being removed as part of efforts by the NSWMA to reduce the incidence of fire at the disposal site.
Since 2005 there have been 12 fires at the landfill and in several instances the presence of the tyres has prolonged the blaze.
