Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caretaker for St Thomas Eastern, Delano Seiveright, says the government needs to clarify what he says are concerns by residents and businesses about the planned development of the Southern Coastal Highway through the parish.

He says since the announcement, residents and businesses have been demanding specific timelines for the planned work.

The JLP caretaker says Transport and Works Minister Dr Omar Davies needs to answer questions such as whether the highway will be a toll road and how issues of employment will be structured.

The Office of the Prime Minister announced Wednesday that the Cabinet has approved a US$385-million contract between the government and China Harbour Engineering Company for the design, improvement and construction of two sections of the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project.

This will involve work from Harbour View in Kingston to Morant Bay in St Thomas.

The government says financing for the project is being done through the China Exim Bank.
