The two St Thomas men in custody over the seizure of a machine gun have retained lawyers and are to be questioned today.

Cousins Rameish and Richard Simpson have been in custody since last Thursday following a dramatic car chase that ended in the sea.

Last week, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ealan Powell, who heads the Criminal Investigation Branch, told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre that the men face charges ranging from illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition to a number of undisclosed traffic violations.

According to the police, about 10:30 Thursday morning, members of a team were patrolling the Grants Pen main road in the parish when they signaled the driver of a Mitsubishi Pajero to stop.

The driver reportedly disobeyed and diverted on to Fish House Lane in the community

The police pursued and the driver drove the vehicle about 300 metres into the sea.

The police say an illegal Uzi submachine firearm and 16 rounds of ammunition were found and the Mitsubishi Pajero had to be pulled from the sea.
