UHWI owed $1.2b in patient fees
The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) has disclosed it is owed $1.2 billion in patient fees.
This was disclosed by the hospital’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Allen, at a press conference yesterday.
Allen made the disclosure as he gave a breakdown of the facility’s budget for the 2015-2016 financial year.
He says the hospital is hoping to collect the debt to help fund its operations.
The UWHI’s acting CEO says provision is being made to write off 50 per cent of patient fees.
Allen says the hospital employs a number of creative strategies to get patients to settle their bills.
He emphasises that the hospital does not turn away patients who cannot afford to pay.
