Communications and entertainment provider Digicel Jamaica is continuing its support of the Bustamante Hospital for Children through a partnership with the Shaggy and Friends Foundation valued at $25 million.

Digicel said the contribution of cash and kind is to go towards the fifth staging of the biennial Shaggy and Friends benefit concert, which is held to raise funds for the facility.

The partnership builds upon the Digicel Foundation's 2011 contribution of $100 million towards the construction of a new Paediatric Cardiac Centre of Excellence at the hospital, which would make it the first of its kind in the Caribbean region.

Through the Digicel Foundation, the company also made an additional contribution of $8 million to the project and spearheaded the first phase of construction before handing it over to the Government of Jamaica for completion.

"As a Jamaican company, we remain committed to the development of our nation and its people," shared Sean Latty, chief operations officer of Digicel Jamaica.

He continued: "A vital ingredient to doing so is ensuring that Jamaicans, especially our children, have ready access to world-class health care, which is the shared goal of the team at the Bustamante Hospital for Children."

Latty added: "With the national statistics showing that between 400 and 500 babies are born with congenital heart disease annually, we felt it was paramount for us to support the construction of this cardiac centre, which is expected to provide treatment and facilitate more than 400 life-saving paediatric operations each year."

The $500-million facility, which is scheduled for completion in 2016, will offer top-tier paediatric cardiology treatment and is outfitted with a modern bi-plane catheterisation laboratory, 10 intensive care unit beds, an operating theatre, specialised equipment, and other vital support facilities.

As in previous years, Digicel has set up a text line to allow customers to support the cause. To make a donation of $50, customers simply send a text message with the word 'GIVE' to 444-2498. As an added bonus, Digicel will be giving away VIP tickets to the Shaggy and Friends concert to the top texters who contribute via this method.

The company will also be reaching out to its extensive social media fan base through its 'DigiDare' campaign, which will see persons helping to raise awareness of the initiative and drive donations online.
