Illegal firearms used for New Year's day gun salute seized
Two illegal firearms which police sources believe were being used for gun salute are among three weapons seized by the police less than an hour into the New Year.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) says one man is in custody in connection with one of the firearms, but adds that his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
The Montego Hills Police report that shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day a team was on patrol in the Norwood Gardens community when they came upon a group of men firing shots.
According to the police, the men ran leaving an A-R15 assault rifle containing 14 rounds of ammunition.
Minutes later in the Corporate Area, the Olympic Gardens Police report that a team was on patrol in the community when they heard loud explosions and went to investigate.
It’s reported that a group of men tossed a Glock pistol containing four rounds of ammunition when they saw the police.
The other firearm was reportedly found during a search of premises in Mount Salem, St James.
