The Zika virus has been confirmed in at least 15 countries across the Americas.

As the Zika virus (ZIKV) moves closer to the island, the Health Ministry has announced plans to ramp up its mosquito control activities starting this weekend.

Yesterday, health officials in Haiti confirmed the first case of the virus in that country.

The Zika virus has also been confirmed in at least 15 countries across the Americas.

Health Minister Horace Dalley says 12 suspected cases in Jamaica have been investigated, but adds that all tests have come back negative.

Despite this, Dalley is again warning that the threat of the virus reaching Jamaica is real and imminent given the island’s relationship with Haiti and other countries where the Zika virus has been confirmed.

He says the number of aedes aegypti  mosquitoes and their breeding site remains very high in several communities and says his ministry will publishing the names of these communities this week.
