Opposition makes recommendations to gov't on ZIKV preparations

Opposition spokesperson on health, Senator Marlene Malahoo Forte says it is critical that proper measures are in place to do testing for the virus.

Opposition spokesperson on health, Senator Marlene Malahoo Forte, says the health authorities should immediately move to ensure that the country’s facilities are equipped to handle a possible importation of ZIKV.

Senator Malahoo Forte says it is critical that proper measures are in place to do testing for the virus.

Noting that it is the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits ZIKV, dengue fever and the chikungunya virus, she says it is important that adequate facilities are in place to differentiate between the diseases when tests are conducted.

The opposition spokesman on health also says there needs to be a targeted ZIKV programme for pregnant women.

Senator Malahoo Forte says the government needs to look at what has been done by authorities in Brazil regarding ZIKV and seek to obtain best practices mechanisms which can be used in Jamaica.

She says every effort should be made to prevent the virus from being imported to Jamaica.
