How soon can one renew their passport?
Q: I'd like to know how soon before my passport expires, can I apply for a renewal.
A: It is important to note that a passport is valid up until the date of expiry printed in each book. However, if you wish to renew your passport prior to its expiration, an application for renewal may be submitted within a year of expiry date. In other words, you must check to see whether the passport has less than 12 months validity before submitting an application for renewal.
There may be situations, however, in which you plan to leave the country, and the passport has slightly more than 12 months validity remaining, and you are scheduled to return after it expires. In such instances, special consideration may be given by the passport director, after a revision of the case, to allow you to replace your document.
Note that it is best to travel on a passport that has more than six months validity, as you may find yourself being denied entry in some territories.
If you plan to travel overseas, please note there are Jamaican High Commissions, consulates and embassies overseas at which you can submit an application for a renewal of your passport, if it has, or is close to, being expired before your return to the island.
The processing time for application submitted overseas is four to six weeks. You should also note that your current passport will be cancelled at the same time when your applications is accepted. hence, you would need to have enough time to receive your new passport before returning to Jamaica.
The local fee for a renewal service is $6,500 and $4,000 for adults and minors respectively. the cost for a replacement of the document is $11,500 and $7,000, adults and minors, respectively.
If overseas, please check with the relevant Jamaican mission/embassy or consular office for fees applicable to those territories, or you may visit Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency's website to ascertain the cost.
