Former PNP president and Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Manley. The PNP says Manley is a hero to millions of Jamaicans and it is an insult to us all to hear this degrading and dismissive reference to a man who has put Jamaica on the political world map.

The People’s National Party is demanding that Jamaica Labour party Councillor Winston Maragh immediately withdraw his description of Former PNP president and Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Manley as an idiot and publicly apologise.

While moderating a JLP mass meeting in Lionel Town Clarendon on Thursday night Maragh said that through his actions, Manley was responsible for crashing the economy in the 1970s after it was built by the JLP.

The call for an apology has come from the People’s National Party Secretariat, the PNP Women’s Movement and the PNP Youth Organisation (PNPYO).

They also want the political Ombudsman to investigate Maragh for calling the late Prime Minister an idiot and saying the chikungunya virus had killed 3,000 Jamaicans.

“Michael Manley is a hero to millions of Jamaicans and it is an insult to us all to hear this degrading and dismissive reference to a man who has put Jamaica on the political world map, who spearheaded the fight against Apartheid in South Africa, and who was instrumental in changing how Jamaica, the Caribbean and the rest of the developing world was viewed,” the release said.

Meanwhile, PNP General Secretary Paul Burke said “Michael Manley was a freedom fighter for all Jamaicans, he is a National Hero in all but name; he is one of the primary architects of Democratic Socialism. What would have possessed Maragh to be as vulgar and rude as to term him thus?”
