Cops in St Catherine shootout remain in hospital

Two policemen remain hospitalised at this hour after they were injured in a shootout in Ferry, St Catherine last night which left two gunmen dead.

The identities of the two policemen have not been released, but The Gleaner/Power106 News Centre understands that one of them is a Corporal while the other is a Constable.

It's understood that both are attached to the Hunts Bay Police Station.

Head of the St Andrew South Police Division Superintendent Arthur Brown says their injuries are not life-threatening.

According to Brown, the two policemen were part of a team that was on patrol in the Ferry district when they came upon a group of men who opened fire on them.

He says during the exchange the policemen and two gunmen were shot and two firearms seized.

Up to news time, the identities of the two gunmen had not been ascertained.

However, Brown says they were part of a gang that was behind a recent murder and several shootings in the community.
