Centre opens in Belvedere
State Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Luther Buchanan last Sunday officially opened the Ralph Anglin Community Centre located in Belvedere, Westmoreland.
The facility, named in honour of the late former mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, was refurbished at a cost of $10 million, through the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP).
Buchanan said the centre will provide a meeting place for residents and facilitate recreational activities, and is a designated shelter for residents of the area in the event of a disaster.
He commended the Spence family, which donated the lands.
Buchanan, the member of parliament for Eastern Westmoreland, also said the centre must be used to assist adults who want to further their education.
"You have the Jamaican [Foundation for] Lifelong Learning, which has always expressed an interest in coming into Belvedere, but there was nowhere ... that could accommodate that facility. So now we have a place," Buchanan said.
JEEP Project Director Carolyn Gardner was pleased to see the project completed.
