Supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP) clashed in Summerfield, Clarendon earlier this afternoon, after both parties nominated their candidates at the same time.

Desmond Brennan is the representative for the PNP, while the JLP’s candidate is incumbent Member of Parliament, Pearnel Charles.

Tempers flared after enthused party supporters of both political parties in the North Central Clarendon awaited the nomination process.

People on both sides hurled missiles at their opponents.

Police and military personnel had to intervene.

Both candidates urged their supporters to remain calm, refrain from using violence and to allow the democratic process to take its course.

The crowds were dispersed and later rejoined their respective motorcades.

The security forces are maintaining a presence in Chapelton and Summerfield, as both parties are expected to have rallies in the constituency tonight.
