The South East Regional Health Authority is to host two town hall meetings on the Zika virus (ZIKV) in Portmore and St Thomas today.

The meetings are being put on in partnership with the Portmore Municipal Council and the St Thomas Parish Council.

They are expected to focus on sensitising the public about the mosquito-borne Zika virus spreading throughout the Americas.

The Portmore meeting will be held at the Portmore Community College, starting at 5:30 this afternoon, while the St Thomas meeting will take place at the Yallahs Baptist Church, at 6 o’clock.

Zika is spread by the same mosquito which transmits the chikungunya virus.

Portmore and St Thomas were some of the places hardest hit by ChikV when it broke out in Jamaica in 2014.

The virus has been linked to a brain defect in newborn babies and a syndrome which causes paralysis.

Jamaica has confirmed one case of the virus in a child that the ministry of health says recently returned to the island from Texas in the United States.
