Ocho Rios market upgrade soon - Arscott

Local Government Minister Noel Arscott said plans are still afoot to implement a $35-million upgrade of the Ocho Rios Market, which was announced some time ago.

Arscott, who was addressing concerns of councillors attending the monthly meeting of the St Ann Parish Council on Thursday, said it is the mandate of the Government to upgrade markets across the island, noting that substantial work is being done on the Black River Market.

The minister said that there are also plans to appoint a town manager to manage the affairs of Ocho Rios. He said this system is already in place in Linstead, and the authorities are learning from that experience.

Arscott was responding to concerns raised by Councillor Ian Bell, who said $5 million was urgently needed to carry out emergency repairs to the market to avoid it being closed down by the health department, as well as councillor for the Ocho Rios division, Dr Rohan Williams, who questioned when the $35 million, announced several months ago, would be allocated to upgrade the market.
