Mayor wants TEF money to upgrade Ocho Rios

Mayor of St Ann's Bay Desmond Gilmore says the St Ann Parish Council has passed a resolution calling on the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) to allocate a percentage of funds earned from tourism interests in St Ann to the council.

This money would be spent on upgrading Ocho Rios and surrounding communities.

Gilmore made the disclosure after Local Government Minister Noel Arscott, who was attending the monthly meeting of the council recently, suggested that the council find a way to get the tourism dollar to benefit the parish.

Arscott, however, suggested that instead of asking for a set percentage of funds from the TEF, the council should identify specific projects and seek assistance from the TEF.

The matter came about after complaints from several councillors that they have not been getting money from the Equalisation Fund to carry out road repairs and other tasks in their divisions.

Sydney Stewart, Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor for the Bamboo division, complained that despite numerous requests, he has received "not one cent" from the fund.
